Few percussionists have blended cultural tradition, global rhythm, and pop accessibility quite like Luis Conte. Born in Santiago de Cuba, Conte began playing percussion at an early age, soaking in the vibrant street rhythms of Afro-Cuban music before moving to Los Angeles as a teenager. His musical journey would eventually turn him into one of the most in-demand percussionists in the world — a player whose sound is instantly recognizable across genres.
Conte’s artistry lies in his seamless fusion of Cuban rhythm with contemporary styles. Over the course of his decades-long career, he has recorded and toured with an extraordinary range of artists including Madonna, Phil Collins, James Taylor, Santana, Eric Clapton, Shakira, Pat Metheny, and Jackson Browne. His steady partnership with Phil Collins, both on tour and in the studio, became one of his most celebrated collaborations, earning Conte Grammy recognition and introducing Afro-Cuban percussion to a massive global audience.
In addition to his session and touring work, Conte has released several solo projects that showcase his own musical vision — recordings that blend Latin jazz, pop, and folkloric influences. His mastery of instruments such as the congas, bongos, timbales, shakers, and cajón makes him a rare player capable of moving effortlessly from intimate acoustic performances to arena rock shows.
