Mike Mangini

Born on April 18, 1963, in Newton, Massachusetts, Mike Mangini is renowned for his exceptional speed, precision, and contributions to progressive metal drumming. He began drumming at two and a half years old, inspired by Ringo Starr of The Beatles, and by nine, he was emulating performances by Buddy Rich.

Mangini’s early career included collaborations with bands like Annihilator, Extreme, and virtuoso guitarist Steve Vai, showcasing his versatility across various rock and metal subgenres.  In 2011, he joined Dream Theater, succeeding founding drummer Mike Portnoy. During his tenure, Mangini contributed to albums such as A Dramatic Turn of Events (2011), Dream Theater (2013), The Astonishing (2016), and A View from the Top of the World (2021).  He departed from the band in October 2023, coinciding with Portnoy’s return.

Beyond performing, Mangini has held faculty positions at the Berklee College of Music, educating aspiring drummers.  He also authored the “Rhythm Knowledge” instructional books, sharing his drumming methodologies.  Notably, Mangini set multiple World’s Fastest Drummer records between 2002 and 2005, highlighting his technical prowess.
